‘Uru’ are percussion instruments customized using the concept of the Nigerian udu drum. The large round hole on the body when struck with the palm produces deep tonal bass swoops that can be shaped in many ways. They are considered to be the voice of the ancestors in Nigerian culture and one can certainly feel the tones resonate deep into the body and heart.
They provide the much needed papa, or rhythm and pulse, to the rangi, or melodies of the taonga pūoro uku family of instruments.
